MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies removed tents put up by Occupy Minnesota demonstrators early Sunday morning, day ten of the protest in Minneapolis.
About a dozen tents were put in place by the anti-Wall Street protestors Saturday on a grassy area outside the Hennepin County Government Center after authorities warned that tents, tarps and other structures were not allowed on the property.
On Friday, the county provided a 20 foot by 30 foot open-air canopy on the South Plaza for use by demonstrators in inclement weather.
"The raid left many OccupyMN members without protection from the elements on a damp, cold October night. The open canopy offered to OccupyMN members is too small to shelter the roughly 150 sleeping in the plaza," said Organizer Alexa Lindh in a news release Sunday.
Hundreds gathered on the plaza downtown Saturday afternoon. Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies arrested one woman for trespassing but said no arrests were made during the tent take down around 1 a.m.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Hennepin County Security saw a woman defacing Government Center property several days ago and she was instructed not to return to the property for one year. When the woman returned on Saturday, she was arrested. The woman was released around 12:30 a.m.
Occupy Minnesota is part of the national anti-Wall Street movement with demonstrations in multiple major cities.
